SEO Submissions
It’s a common misconception that you must manually submit your website to search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN in order to appear in their listings.
If your website is SEO friendly, it will naturally be recognised by the search engines and listed in their results.
It is possible to manually submit all of the pages from a website to the different search engines, but with a little bit of work, this often won’t be necessary.
Crawlers, Robots & Spiders
How a search engine works is that they have what are referred to as robots (or crawlers or spiders) that move around from one web page to the next in milliseconds, searching for content.
This content then becomes part of the search engine’s index and can be ranked for different searches according to relevance.
The idea of SEO is to ensure that a website is attractive to these search engine robots, so that they will return regularly, constantly looking for new content they can use.
So the question you’re probably thinking is, ‘How do I make my website attractive to search engine robots?’
Here are just some of the ways to create an SEO friendly website and ensure that new content gets listed by the search engines:
Internal Links – If other pages from your website are already included in the search engine’s results, then one way you can always get new content noticed, is by linking to it from those pages that have already been visited by robots. The page that all search engines robots find most easily is your homepage so always try and link to new content from somewhere on your homepage.
Inbound Links – One way that you can always ensure your content gets found by search engine robots is to get other websites linking to it. That way, when the robots visit those other websites, they can follow that link to yours and discover the new content.
There are all kinds of ways you can get other websites to link to yours, but always make sure you try and get links from quality websites that are well established on the search engines.
Written Content – Search engine robots love text and are able to gobble it up very easily. So it’s always a good idea to have as much written content as you possibly can on every single page of your website.
Sitemaps – By adding a sitemap to your website, you can automatically tell the search engines whenever you add a new piece of content. Although this doesn’t guarantee that all of the web pages on your site will be found and included in the listings, it does give you a slightly better chance.
Manual Submissions
As previously stated, if you have a great website but it hasn’t been found by the search engines, or if you simply don’t want to wait, you can manually submit every page yourself and basically tell them directly about your website.
But most of the time manual submissions aren’t really required. Search engine robots find so much information, so quickly that in many cases you only have to wait a matter of hours after adding new content, for it to be found and added to the results.
